Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
Viognier, a French variety, has adapted particularly well to Marsala in western Sicily. The region's distinctive climate gives the wine its structure, minerality and juicy fruit. The fruit comes exclusively from the estate's own vineyards, which cover more than 2100 ha.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand in mid-August. Fermentation lasts 14 days at 15 °C, which preserves and highlights the citrus notes of the grapes.
Ageing
The wine spends a short time in barrels, then matures in bottle for 6 months to soften the taste and reach balance.
Tasting profile
Fresh, elegant and well balanced, with excellent structure, pleasant minerality and juicy fruit. Citrus notes come through. The aroma is herbal, reminiscent of the Mediterranean coast.
Label / history
"Gurgo" is one of three ranges made by Paolini, alongside "Conte di Matarocco" and "Cantine Paolini". The estate, in the traditional winemaking area of Marsala, in Palermo, dates back to 1964. Its wines were long sold only direct from the cellar and were not bottled. In 2004 the decision was made to create products for international markets, which led to the founding of Cantine Paolini S.r.l., a facility dedicated to bottling the estate's wines. Annual production of this wine is 55,000 bottles.
