Vineyard and terroir
The grapes come from the Ulmo, Gurra and Dispensa vineyards in the Menfi and Sambuca di Sicilia areas, at 45–210 metres above sea level. The soils are predominantly clay and limestone. Ulmo was planted in 1985, Dispensa in 1996 and Gurra in 1998. The vineyards are cultivated according to environmental principles.
Grapes
The 2023 blend combined Grecanico, Chardonnay and Grillo with a small proportion of other local varieties.
Vinification
The grapes were harvested by hand from 20 August to 30 September. At the winery, they were cooled to approximately 16–17 °C, destemmed, lightly crushed and gently pressed. The must settled statically for 36 hours at approximately 8–9 °C. Fermentation lasted 10–12 days at a controlled 15–16 °C in stainless-steel tanks of 210, 264 and 600 hL.
Ageing
The wine matured on its fine lees with weekly bâtonnage to preserve its aromas and add body to the palate. It was bottled in January 2024.
Tasting profile
Fresh and well balanced, with an appealing aroma.
Label / history
Produced since 1995, the range takes its name from the woodland surrounding the Ulmo vineyard in the Menfi area, which has belonged to Planeta for centuries. The original label featured an eighteenth-century map showing local places. The current label draws on Sicily’s natural world and the work of Giuseppe Riggio, whose late-eighteenth- and early-nineteenth-century pictorial herbarium depicted Sicilian plants. Its design forms an alphabet of herbs, flowers and roots.
