Vineyard and terroir

Ghiaia Nera combines Nerello Mascalese from terraced vineyards in several Tenuta Tascante contrade on Etna’s northern slope, between Randazzo and Castiglione di Sicilia. The vineyards lie at about 600 m a.s.l., surrounded by chestnut and downy oak woodland in a biodiverse landscape. Their volcanic sediments derive from formations of different eras. The vines were planted in 2004 and 2007, with espalier training, spur-pruned cordons and a density of 4,500 vines/ha.

Grapes

100% Nerello Mascalese.

Vinification

The 2024 harvest ran from 27 September to 28 October. Traditional red-wine fermentation with maceration lasted six days at 25–30°C. Malolactic fermentation was completed in full.

Ageing

The wine matured for 12 months in non-intrusive, large 25 hl Slavonian oak casks.

Technical data

The 2024 wine has 14.5% alcohol, pH 3.30, total acidity of 5.02 g/L, residual sugar of 0.1 g/L and total extract of 28.8 g/L.

Tasting profile

Soft tannins and fresh acidity shape an approachable, easy-drinking expression of Nerello Mascalese and Etna’s volcanic soils.

Vintage notes

The 2024 season featured rainy winter and spring weather with temperatures above the seasonal average. Summer was hot, though August and September brought useful rainfall. Nerello Mascalese ripened slightly earlier than usual.
