Vineyard and terroir
The grapes come from the Menfi area, at 45–75 metres above sea level, on poor limestone soils. The low fertility limits vine growth and helps concentrate aromatic compounds in the grapes. The nearby sea and good ventilation help balance ripe fruit with fresh acidity. The vineyards are managed according to organic farming principles and the SOStain® protocol, with a focus on environmentally sustainable production and preserving biodiversity.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand, destemmed and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, with around 12 days of skin contact. This extracts tannins while keeping the fruit character clean and clear. Malolactic fermentation gives a rounder, smoother texture.
Ageing
The wine ages in stainless-steel tanks until the end of winter, which preserves its freshness and bright aromas.
Tasting profile
Juicy, soft and velvety, with a warm southern character, ripe fruit and a gentle touch of spice. Rich fruit and soft tannins, with notes of ripe plum, dark berries and sweet spices.
Serving and pairing
Suited to grilled meat.
Label / history
The "La Segreta" range is named after the forest surrounding Planeta's "Ulmo" vineyard in the Menfi area. The label has a new design inspired by Sicilian nature. Its artists drew on the work of the pharmacist Giuseppe Riggio, who created an "erbario picto" at the beginning of the nineteenth century, portraying Sicily's flora. The design features a collection of herbs, flowers and roots.
