Vineyard and terroir
Nocera is a native grape of northern Sicily, and only a few wineries make single-varietal wines from it. Planeta grows it on several hectares in the province of Messina, on the Capo Milazzo peninsula. The setting is the "La Baronia" vineyard, surrounded by the sea and ancient olive trees.
Vinification
The grapes are hand-harvested into small 15–17 kg crates, and after careful sorting they are destemmed. Fermentation takes place on the skins in steel tanks for 10 days at controlled temperature, with manual punch-downs and pump-overs. Once the juice is separated from the skins, malolactic fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks.
Ageing
The wine stays in stainless steel tanks until bottling.
Vintage notes
2023: harvest ran from 22 to 24 September. The season was hot and dry, although Capo Milazzo usually has heavy rainfall. The Nocera grapes were slightly stressed by the sun, reached ideal ripeness and gave a good crop. The wine was bottled in January 2024 and is ready to drink now. It will keep well until the end of 2030.
Label / history
Planeta has made Nocera wine since 2015.
