Vineyard and terroir
Malpelo is part of the Tenuta Plozner range from Barbeano di Spilimbergo, in the Friuli Grave area. The estate’s vineyards cover 43 ha at 140 m above sea level. Approximately 70% of the upper Friulian plain consists of stones and gravel deposited by the Meduna, Cellina and Tagliamento rivers following the melting of the Alpine glaciers. This porous alluvial ground drains abundant spring rainfall and naturally limits production.
The Carnic Alps protect the vineyards from cold northern winds, while nearby maritime currents temper the climate. Planting density is 6,000 vines/ha, with Guyot training. The property entered conversion to organic farming after its acquisition by Cristiana Bettili in 2013.
