Vineyard and terroir
The grapes come from the municipality of Montalcino. The vineyard is trained to spurred cordon, with grass-covered soil between the rows. The wine page gives an altitude of 500 m, a planting density of 3,500 vines/ha and an average yield of 45 hl/ha; the technical sheet instead gives 400 m, 4,000 vines/ha and 30 hl/ha.
The soils are of Pliocene origin and consist predominantly of deep clay marl, contributing pronounced minerality. The Mediterranean climate brings most rainfall in spring and autumn. Frequent winds across the mid-hill zone support vine health, while generally mild conditions and numerous clear days throughout the growing season encourage gradual, complete ripening.
Grapes
70% Sangiovese Grosso and 30% Merlot.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand. Alcoholic fermentation takes place on the skins for 10–12 days at a controlled temperature of approximately 26°C. Malolactic fermentation follows in stainless-steel tanks.
