Vineyard and terroir
The Merlot comes from the Piantonaia vineyard on the upper slopes of Ruffoli, in Greve in Chianti (Florence), at an average elevation of 430 m above sea level. The hillside site faces west–southwest. Its sandy-silty soil contains a particularly high proportion of stones. The vines are 15 years old and trained to spurred cordon.
Grapes
100% Merlot.
Vinification
Harvest takes place during the second ten-day period of September. Alcoholic fermentation lasts 12 days in stainless-steel tanks.
Ageing
The wine matures for 18 months in new 225 L French oak barriques. It is bottled in July and receives at least six further months of bottle maturation.
Technical data
The current wine page gives an alcohol content of 13.5% vol., while the technical sheet gives 13% vol. Average annual production is 1,000–1,400 bottles of 750 ml. Available formats are 750 ml, 1.5 L and 3 L. The 750 ml bottles are packed in six-bottle wooden cases; 1.5 L and 3 L bottles are offered in individual wooden cases.
Tasting profile
The aromatic profile is striking and distinctive. On the palate, the wine is restrained yet enveloping, with richness, fullness and breadth of flavour.

Piantonaia was first produced in 1999. It is grown and made by Vittorio Fiore and sons.
