Vineyard and terroir
Richiari comes from the eponymous hillside vineyard at Ruffoli, in Greve in Chianti (Firenze), within the Chianti Classico area. The site lies at an average elevation of 370 m and faces southwest. Its sandy, silty and loam-rich soil contains abundant stones. Approximately 1,500 Chardonnay vines were planted in this small vineyard area; the vines are trained to a low-spurred Cordon de Royat system and are described as more than ten years old.
Grapes
100% Chardonnay. The wine was conceived as an expression of Chardonnay from the Ruffoli hill, with oak ageing adding complexity. The first vintage was produced in 2003.
Vinification
Harvest takes place during the second half of September. The grapes undergo cold pre-fermentation maceration and gentle pressing. Alcoholic fermentation is conducted in 228 L oak barrels, half of them new. Bottling takes place in June or July.
Ageing
The wine remains on its lees, with bâtonnage during the first three months. It then continues ageing in the same barrels, spending 9–10 months in oak in total. Bottle maturation lasts at least six months before release.
Technical data
Alcohol: 13.5%. Average annual production is approximately 900 bottles of 750 ml. Packaging is available for 750 ml and 1.5 L bottles.
Tasting profile
The style emphasizes Chardonnay's elegance, with barrel maturation contributing additional complexity and refinement.
