Vineyard and terroir
The grapes are grown in the municipalities of Butera and Riesi, in the province of Caltanissetta. The vineyards stand on hills at 300–400 m above sea level, a few kilometres from the sea. They receive the warmth of the southern sun and strong maritime breezes. The soils are rich in white limestone, which reflects light and creates a distinctive microclimate around the vines. The estate has 320 ha of vineyards, including 180 ha planted with young vines.
Vinification
Fermentation lasts two weeks.
Ageing
The wine matures for 12 months, divided equally between 350 L and 60 L barrels, followed by several months in bottle.
Label / history
The estate once belonged to the aristocratic Branciforte and Lanza di Scalea families. Ambrogio Branciforte, appointed the first Sicilian viceroy in 1543, was granted the title of Prince of Butera by King Philip II of Spain. In 1895, the title and land passed to Girolamo Lanza. The Zonin family acquired Feudo Principi di Butera in 1997.
