Vineyard and terroir
The fruit is grown in the municipalities of Butera and Riesi, in the province of Caltanissetta. The vineyards stand on hills at 300–400 m above sea level, a few kilometres from the coast. Strong sea breezes moderate the hot, sunny conditions. The soils are rich in white limestone, which reflects light and creates a distinctive microclimate around the vines. Planting density is 4,400 vines per hectare.
The estate’s vineyards cover 320 ha, including 180 ha planted with young vines.
Vinification
Fully ripe grapes are harvested into small crates during the first week of September and gently pressed. Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks at a controlled temperature.
Ageing
The wine rests on its lees for six months, followed by several additional months in bottle.
Label / history
Feudo Principi di Butera once belonged to the aristocratic Branciforte and Lanza di Scalea dynasties. Ambrogio Branciforte became the first Sicilian viceroy in 1543 and was granted the title of Prince of Butera by King Philip II of Spain. The title and lands passed to Girolamo Lanza in 1895. The Zonin family acquired the estate in 1997.
