Vineyard and terroir
The grapes are grown in the communes of Butera and Riesi, in the province of Caltanissetta. The estate’s vineyards occupy 320 hectares on hillsides, with 180 hectares planted to young vines. The sites receive hot southern sunshine and strong cooling breezes from the nearby sea.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested at advanced ripeness, destemmed and gently pressed. The must ferments in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks.
Ageing
The wine rests on its lees for six months, followed by several further months of maturation after bottling.
Label / history
The estate formerly belonged to the aristocratic Branciforte and Lanza di Scalea dynasties. Ambrogio Branciforte became the first Sicilian viceroy appointed to the position in 1543 and was granted the title Prince of Butera by King Philip II of Spain. The title and estate passed to Girolamo Lanza in 1895. The Zonin family acquired Feudo Principi di Butera in 1997.
