Vineyard and terroir
The vineyards lie near Alcamo in the province of Trapani. The vines were planted in 1998 on clay soils at 250–300 m above sea level, with a north-northwest exposure and a planting density of 4,500 vines per hectare.
Grapes
Nero d’Avola is blended with a small proportion of Merlot.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand from late September to the first days of October, then gently pressed and macerated for 8–10 days. Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel vats at 24–26 °C for 8–10 days, followed by malolactic fermentation.
Ageing
The wine rests for around six months in stainless-steel tanks and then for a further five months in 50 hL oak barrels.
Tasting profile
The nose offers aromas of forest floor, blackcurrant, blackberry and other ripe berries.
Label / history
The name Il Principe means “prince” in Italian, a title usually held by members of a royal family.
