Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from the organically cultivated Patti Piccolo vineyard in the commune of Alcamo, where no chemicals are used. Nero d’Avola, planted in 2006, grows in sandy soil on east-facing slopes at 400 metres above sea level. Merlot, planted in 2005, grows in clay soil on southeast-facing sites at 100–150 metres. Cabernet Sauvignon, planted in 2001, grows in sandy soil on a south-facing site at 500 metres.
Grapes
The blend comprises 40% Nero d’Avola, 30% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand. Merlot is picked first, in late August or early September; Nero d’Avola and Cabernet Sauvignon follow in September when fully ripe. At the winery, the fruit is carefully sorted and gently pressed. Skin maceration lasts 15–20 days, and fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks at 22–24 °C for 15–20 days.
Ageing
The wine matures for 12 months in medium-toast oak barrels, followed by 12 months in bottle before release.
Tasting profile
The nose offers generous aromas of red fruit, ripe cherries and currants. The palate is fruity, with soft, velvety tannins.
Label / history
The name honours Rujaro II, ruler of Palermo in the late twelfth century, whose life was closely connected with Sicily’s feudal history from early childhood.
