Vineyard and terroir

The Chardonnay comes from vineyards in the Langhe area around Dogliani. The vines face north-east and average 10 years of productive age. They are trained to classic Guyot at a density of approximately 6,000 vines per hectare. Average yield is 50 hl/ha, and the soils consist of calcareous marl.

Grapes

100% Chardonnay.

Vinification

Harvest begins in early September. The grapes undergo very gentle pressing followed by temperature-controlled fermentation. The technical sheet specifies stainless-steel tanks, with 30% of the wine fermented in oak barriques. The main wine description also identifies first- and second-use French barriques alongside stainless steel.

Ageing

The wine matures on its lees. The technical sheet gives a period of 6–7 months in stainless-steel tanks with bâtonnage, while the main description refers more broadly to several months on the lees in both oak and stainless-steel vessels.

Technical data

  • Appellation: Langhe Chardonnay DOC
  • Training system: classic Guyot
  • Planting density: approximately 6,000 vines/ha
  • Average yield: 50 hl/ha

Tasting profile

Bright, lively straw yellow. The intense bouquet evokes tropical fruit, banana and grapefruit. The palate is savoury, balanced and harmonious, finishing with a honeyed note. Its overall character is fresh and elegant.

Serving and pairing

Particularly suitable with fish, shellfish and crustaceans, as well as vegetable-based dishes. Bottle ageing adds complexity and allows the wine to accompany more highly spiced recipes.

Label / history

The historic “soldier” label was created by Renato Ratti in remembrance of the Piedmontese regiments that defended their region during the Napoleonic period around 1800. The wine uses the Albeisa bottle, named after Alba and created by Renato Ratti in 1973 to identify the territory and its wines.
