Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
This wine comes from the old vines in Roagna's Montefico parcel, positioned halfway up the hill in the central part of the amphitheatre facing Neive. The family purchased the 0.24 ha plot in 1929, and Montefico is the vineyard it has vinified for the longest continuous period.
The small triangular parcel faces south-east at 230 m above sea level. Its Tertiary soils formed through marine sedimentation around 70 million years ago. Marl is prominent within the calcareous clay subsoil of this north-western sector of Barbaresco. Some of its old Nebbiolo vines were planted soon after the arrival of phylloxera.
Grapes
Nebbiolo.
Ageing
The collection spends an average of five years in wood and concrete. Montefico can require from 4–5 years to more than 10 years of maturation in particular vintages, including ageing in large oak casks. The casks are handmade with staves bent by steam rather than toasted, using wood seasoned for up to ten years. Bottling takes place during summer once full maturity has been reached. Long ageing produces natural clarity, making filtration and fining unnecessary.
Technical data
Annual production is approximately 1,000 bottles, with the precise total printed on the label.
Tasting profile

The 2004, 2005 and 2006 vintages were released as Barbaresco Montefico. From the 2007 vintage onward, the label carries the designation “Vecchie Viti.”
Label / history
Montefico derives from the Piedmontese expression “mont der fi,” historically used for parcels planted with vines. The family acquired its plot in 1929.
