Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
The grapes are grown within the Chianti appellation.
Vinification
Harvest usually takes place in the second half of September. The grapes are gently crushed and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats for 12–14 days at an average of 26–28 °C. Malolactic fermentation follows.
Ageing
The wine matures on its lees for four months in neutral stainless-steel and concrete vessels, followed by further time in bottle.
Label / history
Ilario and Leopoldo Ruffino first made Ruffino Chianti after founding the winery in Pontassieve, near Florence, in 1877. For decades it was associated with the straw-wrapped, long-necked fiasco. The design is believed to date from the Middle Ages, when its straw covering and handle made it practical for carrying wine in goatskin bags and fastening it to a rider’s saddle. In 1975 Ruffino replaced the fiasco with a Florentine bottle that became a company trademark.
The wine was named best wine at an exhibition in Bordeaux in 1895. In 1984, when the Chianti DOCG appellation was established, it received the first official quality seal.
