Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from vineyards at the Gretole and Santedame estates. The vines grow at 350–470 m above sea level on clay and sandy soils, with south-, southwest- and southeast-facing exposures.
Grapes
The blend comprises 85% Sangiovese and a combined 15% Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Vinification
Harvest begins in mid-September and lasts almost a month, with careful selection of the grapes. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats at 28 °C for about 10 days, followed by a further 15 days of skin maceration. The wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation.
Ageing
The wine matures for 36 months in oak barrels and in stainless-steel and concrete vats. After bottling, it rests for another three to four months in the estate’s cellars before release.
Tasting profile
The wine has an elegant, distinctive style and a strong character.
Label / history
Riserva Ducale was originally called Chianti Stravecchio. Its present name means “Ducal Reserve” and followed certification by the Duke of Aosta. According to legend, the Duke admired Ruffino wines, served them regularly at his table in the late nineteenth century and ordered an official certificate recognizing their quality. Riserva Ducale Oro was created as an evolution of Riserva Ducale and was first released in 1947.
