Ruffino was founded in 1877 in Pontassieve, near Florence, by cousins Ilario and Leopoldo Ruffino, Tuscan winemakers from a family tradition. In 1895, Ruffino Chianti was named best wine at an exhibition in Bordeaux. In 1984, upon the establishment of the Chianti DOCG appellation, that wine received the first official state quality seal.
