Vineyard and terroir

The 2021 Riserva draws on 22.5 ha of the “Salcheto” vineyards in Montepulciano.

Grapes

Latest published vintage (2021): 95% Prugnolo Gentile and 5% Colorino.

Vinification

The wine is made with the Governo Toscano method. Pure Prugnolo Gentile grapes are allowed to become slightly overripe through partial drying before vinification.

Ageing

Ageing lasts 24 months, divided between 70% botte and 30% tonneaux, followed by at least 12 months in bottle.

Technical data

The 2021 has 14% alcohol, 5.96 g/L total acidity, pH 3.44, 2.33 g/L residual sugar and 29.92 g/L dry extract. It records 4,002 phenols, color tonality of 0.92 and color intensity of 8.24. Production was 19,000 bottles. It is sealed with natural cork and offered in 750 ml and 1.5 L formats; the 750 ml Salcheto Bordeaux bottle weighs 370 g.

Tasting profile

Black cherry and raspberry are joined by an herbal element and a black-liquorice finish. Earthy, herbal flavors continue on the palate, where dark chocolate and pepper meet vibrant tannins.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 18–20°C. Expected drinking window: 10–12 years.

Vintage notes

The 2021 growing season was marked by intense climatic events, particularly frost and drought. The resulting wines are intense and robust.
