Vineyard and terroir
Salco comes from the estate’s most mature plots: Salco, covering 2 ha, and Laghetto, covering 3.5 ha, at the heart of the Salcheto estate in Montepulciano. An estate selection of Prugnolo Gentile regularly achieves slight overripeness.
Grapes
100% Prugnolo Gentile.
Ageing
The wine matures in wood for 24 months, with 30% in large oak vats and 70% in tonneaux, followed by 36 months of bottle refinement before release.

The 2018 wine has 13.5% alcohol, total acidity of 5.21 g/L, pH 3.46, residual sugar of 0.83 g/L, dry extract of 29.80 g/L and 3,059 mg/L phenols. Color tonality is 0.81 and color intensity is 7.18. Tasting profile
The 2018 is characterized by balance and elegance. A published note for the 2017 describes wild berries, pipe tobacco and blue flowers on the nose. Its juicy, polished and linear palate presents tart pomegranate, orange zest and star anise, supported by bright acidity and lithe tannins, with a coffee-bean nuance on the finish.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 18–20°C. Expected ageing potential is 12–15 years.
Vintage notes
The 2018 season was relatively cool and rainy in both spring and summer, producing a classically styled, balanced and elegant wine. The 2017 tasting note recommended drinking through 2025.
Label / history
Salco has been produced as a vintage cru since 1999. In old Tuscan, “salco” means willow; flexible willow branches, called “vinco,” were traditionally used to tie vines.
