Vineyard and terroir

Salco 2089 comes from the mature 5.5 ha “Salco and the Lake” vineyard at the heart of the Salcheto estate in Montepulciano. Salco has been made as a vintage cru from this site since 1999.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese. Salco 2089 combines two vintages: 58% 2008 and 42% 2009. The 2008 component was selected for its strength and linear character, while the 2009 component contributed depth and a more romantic expression. The blend was developed by Michele Manelli, Paolo Vagaggini and Salcheto’s technical team with particular attention to tannic texture.

Ageing

Matured for 24 months, with 30% in botte and 70% in tonneaux, followed by 36 months of bottle refinement.

Technical data

Alcohol is 14.0%, total acidity 6.48 g/L, pH 3.61 and dry extract 28.30 g/L. The wine records 3,980 phenols, color tonality of 0.76 and color intensity of 9.08. The lot comprised 6,270 bottles and was bottled on 23 July 2012 under natural cork. The standard 750 ml Bordeaux bottle weighs 450 g; formats also include 1.5 L, 3 L and 5 L.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 18–20°C. Expected drinking window: 12–15 years.

Vintage notes

The name “2089” reflects the union of the 2008 and 2009 vintages rather than a conventional single vintage.
