Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
Costa di Giulia is an estate cru at the foot of Castagneto Carducci and was among the early white Bolgheri wines. It is presented as an expression of Bolgheri’s potential for long-lived white wine.
Grapes
60% Vermentino and 40% Sauvignon Blanc. Sauvignon Blanc has formed 40% of the final blend alongside Vermentino since 1997.
Vinification
The varieties ferment separately. The hand-picked, undestemmed grapes go directly to a slow, gentle pressing. The must settles for two to three days at 4–5 °C, is racked, brought to 13 °C and inoculated. Fermentation takes place at a very low temperature and may last as long as one month. Vermentino ferments in stainless steel and Sauvignon Blanc in concrete.
Ageing
The wine remains in stainless steel on fine lees for approximately six months. It is then filtered and bottled before Easter, although it reaches fuller expression after the summer.
Tasting profile
A poised, long-lived white whose full expression develops after the summer following bottling.
Serving and pairing
Its capacity to evolve over several years is described as particularly strong, with drinking recommended from the second year onward.
Label / history
Sauvignon Blanc was introduced into the blend in 1997, establishing the present 60:40 relationship with Vermentino.
