Vineyard and terroir

Podere dei Blumeri grew from a viticultural project begun in 2000 after evaluation of the estate’s microclimate and soils in Colli Orientali del Friuli. The vines grow on hilly marl soils of Eocene origin and are trained to Guyot and cordon spur. Yield is 35 q/ha.

Grapes

The 2017 blend is 50% Merlot and 50% Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso.

Vinification

The grapes are harvested manually during the second and third decades of September. Fermentation lasts 10–15 days in large wooden vats at 25 °C.

Ageing

The wine matures for 14 months in 225- and 500-litre oak barrels, followed by at least 18 months in bottle.

Technical data

The 2017 wine has 14.00% alcohol, 5.0 g/L total acidity and 2.2 g/L residual sugar.

Tasting profile

Deep ruby red. The initially elegant, fruit-led bouquet brings blackcurrant and morello cherry, followed by balsamic and tobacco notes. The palate is intense yet soft, with fine tannins, fresh energy and a long, persistent finish.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 18 °C. Pair with white or red meat, medium- or long-aged cheeses, regional dishes and goulash.

Label / history

The project began in 2000, and the first vintage was produced in 2001.
