Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from a prized south-facing slope of the estate in Capriva del Friuli. The Curia of Gorizia planted Friulano there in 1954 together with a small proportion of Riesling. The hillside soils are marl of Eocene origin, and the vines are trained to bilateral Guyot. Yield is limited to 30 q/ha (3,000 kg/ha).
Grapes
The latest published vintage, 2019, is a blend of 95% Friulano and 5% Riesling. Friulano supplies the local expression, while Riesling contributes mineral complexity.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand in early September. Fermentation lasts 12–14 days in stainless-steel tanks at 16 °C. The wine is made and released only in particularly favorable vintages.
Ageing
The wine matures for 9 months in stainless steel, followed by at least 6 months in bottle.
Technical data
For the 2019 vintage: 13% alcohol by volume, 5.16 g/L total acidity and 0.7 g/L residual sugar.
Tasting profile
Pale yellow with golden reflections. The initially delicate, elegant bouquet develops aromas of ripe fruit followed by sweeter nuances of almond and custard. The palate is elegant, warm and full-bodied, with balanced fruit notes led by pear and quince. The finish is fresh, intense and distinctly mineral.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 13 °C. Pair with first courses, including fish-based preparations, soups and white meats. Its body also complements lobster spaghetti.
Label / history
Known within the estate as “Il Mario,” this wine is dedicated to Mario Schiopetto and was created to express the character of Capriva del Friuli. Its first vintage was 2015.
