Vineyard and terroir
Vigna dell’Impero is a historic cru planted in 1935 by Amedeo, Duke of Savoy-Aosta. The published 2016 wine comes from 80-year-old Sangiovese vines at 278 m above sea level, with south-eastern exposure and spurred-cordon training. The soil is stony, and the broader account of the wine also identifies marl-rich ground. Row spacing is 3 m × 0.5 m, while production is 60 hl per hectare.
Grapes
100% Sangiovese from the vineyard planted in 1935. The wine is produced only in the best vintages as a limited edition, with every bottle individually numbered.
Vinification
Temperature-controlled fermentation is followed by soft maceration on the skins for more than one month. The wine is bottled without filtration.
Ageing
Maturation lasts 24 months in large oak barrels, followed by at least 12 months in bottle. The combination of old-vine fruit, extended vinification, large-cask maturation and bottle ageing shapes a wine intended to develop over time.
Technical data
Published vintage: 2016. Recommended serving temperature is 18–20 °C.
Tasting profile
Intense ruby red with garnet reflections. Floral violet and woodland-floor nuances appear on the wine page, while the technical sheet broadens the bouquet to blackcurrant, sour cherry, leather, tobacco and cacao. The palate is balanced and deep, with fine, silky and velvety tannins. Power and complexity lead into a savoury, mineral finish.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 18–20 °C with aged cheeses or feathered game.
Label / history
