Vineyard and terroir
Viacroce comes from a single Sangiovese vineyard in Pieve Cervognano, planted in 2003 at 300 metres above sea level. It faces south-south-east. The clay-rich loam contains marine clays of Pliocene origin and abundant fossils.
Grapes
100% Sangiovese.
Vinification
The 2022 grapes were harvested by hand and vinified in stainless-steel tanks at a controlled temperature for 25 days. Skin maceration and frequent pumping over during the initial stage promoted polyphenol extraction. Malolactic fermentation took place in steel before the wine was transferred to wood.
Ageing
The wine spent 24 months in wood: 12 months in barriques and 12 months in 50 hL French oak barrels. A further year of bottle ageing completed the maturation.
Tasting profile
The 2022 is an intense ruby red. Its complex bouquet begins with concentrated blackberry and blueberry, then develops floral notes and delicate spice, followed over time by integrated tertiary aromas. The palate is full, round and voluminous, with dense, silky tannins and a poised acid-alcohol balance. The finish is exceptionally long.
Serving and pairing
Available in a 0.75 L format.
Vintage notes
The 2022 winter was mild and very rainy, replenishing groundwater reserves before a particularly hot, dry spring and summer with very little significant rainfall. The grapes reached harvest healthy and concentrated in both technological and phenolic terms.
Label / history
Viacroce is conceived as an interpretation of the strength and historical identity carried by Sangiovese grown in Pieve Cervognano, and as a tribute to the character of this land.
