Storia

Origins (early 1930s)

Luigi Giuliani returned from New York after the 1929 crisis and bought the 3 ha Terenzuola estate in the municipality of Fosdinovo. The land was suited to growing olives and vegetables and to producing honey.

Ivan Giuliani takes over (1993–2004)

In 1993 Luigi's grandson Ivan Giuliani took over the small family business. Around that time, wines made in Colli di Luni received DOC classification, guaranteeing their geographical origin and production methods. Ivan became closely involved in the estate and concentrated on winemaking. His first significant result was the 1999 harvest. That same year a new winery was established on the estate, and the family began expanding its vineyard holdings. By 2004 the estate was harvesting grapes from 10 ha.

Expansion (2006–2007)

From 2006 Ivan continued to expand the vineyards, aiming to bring together sites in Luni, Cinque Terre and Lunigiana. In 2007 the vineyard area reached 15 ha, and Marco Nicolini, a local farmer and longtime friend of Signor Giuliani, joined the team. That year Ivan also began a joint project with the Pasini family in Cinque Terre, to broaden the geographical reach of his production and to make new wines reflecting a particular region.

Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre means "Five Lands". Five villages (Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore) sit on the steep coastline, almost clinging to the cliffs. Grapes have been grown there for a thousand years on hand-built dry-stone terraces. In the 1960s socioeconomic decline led to the gradual abandonment of these lands. The area was added to the World Heritage List in 1997 and given the status of an Italian National Park. Ivan Giuliani decided to revive its long winemaking traditions and help preserve the landscape.

Terroir

The estate lies in the municipality of Fosdinovo, in the heart of Colli di Luni on the Mediterranean coast. Vineyard sites are sought in Luni, Cinque Terre and Lunigiana. In Cinque Terre, five villages (Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore) sit on a steep coastline, almost clinging to the cliffs. The vines grow on hand-built dry-stone terraces rich in sandstone and gravel.

Filosofia

Ivan Giuliani's Cinque Terre project aims to broaden the geographical reach of his production and to make new wines that reflect a particular region. He decided to revive the area's long winemaking traditions and help preserve the landscape built by earlier generations.
