Liguria

48 cantine, 27 vini e 8 denominazioni. Liguria is a narrow strip of coast in north-western Italy, curving around Genoa between the Maritime Alps and Apennines and the Ligurian Sea — the Italian Riviera, with the Riviera di Ponente to the west and the Riviera di Levante to the east. There is almost no flat land, and its vineyards cling to terraces cut into steep slopes above the water, nowhere more famously than in the Cinque Terre. Continua a leggere ↓

La regione

Liguria in breve

It is one of Italy's smallest wine regions, second only to Valle d'Aosta for low output: 72,700 hectolitres in 2022 from about 1,900 hectares, almost 70 per cent of it white. Vermentino covers 27 per cent of the vineyards and Pigato — a local biotype of the same variety — another 15; the red Rossese has 12.

Liguria has no DOCG. Its eight DOCs include the Cinque Terre, which also makes the sweet passito Sciacchetrà from dried grapes; Rossese di Dolceacqua in the far west near the French border; the Riviera Ligure di Ponente; and the Colli di Luni on the border with Tuscany. Four IGPs complete the picture, and most of the wine is drunk on the Riviera itself.
