Vineyard and terroir

The 2021 wine came from a 3 ha vineyard in Gualdo Cattaneo at 300–350 m above sea level. The vines were 12 years old, planted in medium-textured soil at 4,500 vines per hectare and trained to Guyot. Yield was 80 q/ha.

Grapes

White grape varieties permitted by the Montefalco DOC production rules, including Chardonnay; proportions are not specified.

Vinification

The grapes were selected in the vineyard, picked by hand in the early morning and chilled at the cellar to limit oxidation and unwanted fermentation. They underwent white vinification with gentle pressing in an oxygen-free environment, followed by 24 hours of static settling and inoculation with selected yeasts. Part of the Chardonnay must fermented in barrique and remained there on its lees for at least a further six months, with frequent stirring. The remaining must fermented at low temperature for 12–14 days in stainless-steel tanks. The separate components were blended in spring and matured further in steel.

Ageing

After maturation in barrique and stainless steel, the wine spent 12 months in bottle.

Technical data

2021: 13.5% vol.; 5,966 bottles produced. The vineyard yield was 80 q/ha. Bottle size: 750 ml.

Tasting profile

Deep straw yellow with golden highlights. The evolved, elegant bouquet opens with apricot and thyme, followed by exotic fruit, integrated vanilla and toasted notes. The palate combines intensity with agility and finishes with a pronounced mineral character. The shop description additionally emphasizes exotic fruit, aromatic herbs, freshness and persistence.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 12–14°C with structured fish-based first courses, white meats or semi-aged cheeses.

Vintage notes

The 2021 growing season began dry, while beneficial September rain restored balance during the final fortnight before harvest. Yields were below average, but the berries were concentrated. Harvest began approximately six to seven days earlier than in recent years, with less acceleration in the cooler, higher vineyards toward Todi. The white grapes from Gualdo and Montefalco showed high quality, and the Chardonnay was well balanced and healthy.
