Vineyard and terroir

The 10 ha of vineyards extend across Torrececcona di Todi, Gualdo Cattaneo and Montefalco at elevations from 250 to 400 m above sea level. The clay and medium-textured soils support vines between 12 and 20 years old. They are trained to spur-pruned cordon and planted at 5,000 vines per hectare. Yield is 100 q/ha.

Grapes

Sangiovese, Merlot and other red grape varieties authorized in Umbria.

Vinification

Harvest takes place from mid- to late September. The grapes are destemmed and crushed, then inoculated with selected yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats equipped with automated pumping over. Alcoholic fermentation lasts approximately ten days, with délestage and/or pumping over. Malolactic fermentation is completed in stainless steel.

Ageing

Maturation in stainless steel is followed by bottle ageing.

Technical data

Tasting profile

Ruby red with purple reflections. Floral aromas develop into pronounced red-berry fruit. The palate is vinous, with red-fruit and red-flower sensations. Medium-bodied and tannic, it finishes with a mineral character.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 18 °C, or at room temperature, with pasta and meat sauces, red meats or roasts.

Vintage notes

The 2021 vintage produced less fruit than average. An initially dry period was relieved by beneficial September rainfall, restoring balance to low-yielding but concentrated berries during the final two weeks before harvest. Picking began approximately 6–7 days earlier than in recent vintages, although the advance was less evident in the cooler, higher hills toward Todi. Merlot, Sangiovese and the other red grapes reached strong sugar and polyphenolic ripeness, and all fruit entered the winery in very good health.
