Vineyard and terroir

Vigna Spuntali comprises 15 ha on the southwestern slope of Montalcino, at 300 m above sea level. Its dry, sunny and well-ventilated Mediterranean climate is clearly influenced by the nearby sea. The sandy soils originate from degraded Pietraforte stone.

The vineyard is surrounded by centuries-old olive trees and Mediterranean scrub, including myrtle, helichrysum and rosemary. Planting density is approximately 5,000 vines per hectare, and the vines are trained to double Guyot.

Vinification

Harvesting proceeds by micro-area, with manual grape selection into crates during the early morning. The fruit is destemmed and optically sorted. Whole berries ferment for 12–15 days at 20–30°C with gentle extraction, followed by a post-fermentation maceration lasting 15–20 days at 30°C.

Ageing

The wine matures in a dedicated cellar. It spends six months in 300 L French oak barriques, then moves to 25 hl oval Austrian oak barrels before approximately three months in concrete. The wine page gives 24 months in Austrian oak, whereas the linked technical sheet gives 18 months. Bottle maturation lasts 12–15 months.

Technical data

The wine is described stylistically as Mediterranean, complex, rounded and spicy.

Tasting profile

Garnet red in colour. The aromatic profile combines Mediterranean scrub, broom flowers, citrus and candied fruit with spices, tobacco and chocolate. The palate is ample yet light, soft and savoury, with medium-sweet tannins, a pronounced iodine character and a long, deep finish.

With age, it follows an oxidative evolution in which spices, tobacco and chocolate become increasingly prominent.

Serving and pairing

Suitable partners include pigeon, pheasant, quail and medium-mature pecorino cheese. At 9–12 years, the wine emphasizes sweetness; at 20–30 years, it displays its tertiary evolution. Its stated ageing potential is 20–30 years.
