Label / history
The name refers to Balbium, the historical name associated with Altomonte. According to the account, the town took its name from Balbium wine, which was offered as tribute to the Roman emperor Decius Caelius Calvinus Balbinus. Born into a noble family around 170, Balbinus served as consul and governor of Calabria before becoming co-emperor on 22 April 238; he was killed 99 days later. The Terre di Balbia area retains his name and has an ancient winemaking heritage.
