Vineyard and terroir
The Ronco delle Mele vineyard has a northwestern exposure, which allows the grapes to ripen slowly and develop a more pronounced varietal character. A major landslide occurred there in the early 1940s; its traces remain visible. Apple trees were subsequently planted to stabilise the ground and limit further erosion. Over time, the vineyard’s soil became enriched with organic matter.
Vinification
The grapes are destemmed and macerated for approximately 20 hours at 11–12 °C in oxygen-protected containers equipped with a system designed to reduce antioxidant use. Twenty per cent of the must ferments in large wooden casks of 20–27 hl, while the remainder ferments in stainless-steel tanks. Blending and bottling take place during the full moon between late March and May.
Ageing
The portion fermented in wooden casks remains there on its lees for six months. The remaining wine is aged in stainless-steel tanks.
Tasting profile
The aroma is elegant. The palate combines freshness and richness with a balanced character, followed by an unusually long finish for a white wine.
Vintage notes
In 2020, a dry winter was followed by flowering around 20 May, approximately ten days earlier than in the previous year. June and July brought changeable weather, while August provided excellent conditions with occasional rain. The resulting variation between daytime and nighttime temperatures contributed to aromatic complexity. The harvest was of excellent quality but slightly smaller in volume. Wines from the growing season showed complex, deep aromas, balanced acidity and rich fruit flavours.
Label / history
“Ronco delle Mele” means “Apple Hill” in Italian. The name recalls the apple trees planted by Daniele, the great-grandfather of the winery’s current owners, after the landslide in the early 1940s. The wine received Gambero Rosso’s highest “Three Glasses” rating.
