Vineyard and terroir
Vigna Le Prata covers slightly less than one hectare at an average altitude of 507 metres, near the summit of Montalcino hill. The vineyard occupies a plateau on a slope formed from Pliocene marine polygenic conglomerates dating back approximately 3–5 million years. Its deep brown soils contain frequent, heavily weathered pebbles and have a predominantly sandy loam-clay texture. They are non-calcareous and naturally acidic, with good structure, effective drainage and high water reserves.
The vineyard is surrounded by olive trees, wild cherry trees, chestnuts and cypresses, while spontaneous grasses and flowers grow among the vines. Its planting layout is 120 × 300 cm, with spur-pruned cordon training.
Marked temperature variations at this altitude support phenolic development and aromatic complexity while limiting the degradation of acidity. The Pliocene pebbles and acidic soil environment are associated with intense, persistent fruit aromas and a style of moderate structure, perfume, spice and complexity.
Grapes
Sangiovese Grosso.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand. Fermentation begins spontaneously, followed by approximately 20–30 days of skin maceration.
Ageing
The wine matures for approximately 36 months in 20 and 30 hL oak casks, followed by at least six months in bottle.
Tasting profile
An elegant and harmonious Brunello shaped by freshness and complexity. Its elevated, well-drained site and mineral-rich Pliocene soils contribute aromatic intensity, persistent fruit character and spicy nuances.
Label / history
Massimo Losappio established the estate’s first vineyard here in the late 1980s. The wine’s label illustration was created by Florentine artist Arianna Papini.
