Vineyard and terroir

Vigna San Prospero extends across approximately half a hectare at an average altitude of 495 metres. Planted in 1998 beside woodland, its cultivated vines are grafted onto wild vines found in the estate’s woods. The gently convex slope faces south to southwest.

The vineyard lies on the Sillano–Santa Fiora Formation, created during the Upper Cretaceous–Paleocene period approximately 60–75 million years ago. Its moderately deep soils have a usable depth of around 100–110 cm and contain frequent fragments of marly limestone and siltstone, with occasional calcarenite. The texture is predominantly loam-clay; the soils are slightly calcareous, subalkaline and moderately structured. The planting layout is 100 × 290 cm, with spur-pruned cordon training.

Clay derived from the marly limestone supports structure and colour, while the mineral fraction and arenaceous fragments are associated with fine aromas of red fruit and forest berries. The estate characterises wines from this geological sector as powerful, deeply coloured and long-lived, with abundant polyphenols, robust structure and pronounced aromatic character.

Grapes

Sangiovese Grosso.

Vinification

The grapes are harvested manually. Spontaneous fermentation is followed by approximately 20–30 days of maceration.

Ageing

The wine matures for approximately 36 months in 20 and 30 hL oak casks and rests in bottle for at least six months.

Tasting profile

Elegant and supple, with substantial structure and complexity. Its loam-clay and marly limestone soils contribute concentration, aromatic persistence and red-fruit and forest-berry character.
