Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from west-, east- and south-facing vineyards on the hillsides around the estate, planted on marl soils. At Capriva del Friuli, warm air from the nearby Adriatic meets cool air from the Alps, shaping the local microclimate. Villa Russiz covers approximately 94 hectares, of which 40 hectares are vineyards, planted at densities of 4,500–7,000 vines per hectare.
Vinification
Harvest takes place from early to mid-September. The grapes are gently pressed in a pneumatic press, followed by temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless-steel tanks.
Ageing
The wine remains on its lees for eight to ten months.
Tasting profile
Graceful, delicate and elegant.
Label / history
Count Theodore de La Tour settled in the hills of Collio with his wife in 1869 and established the estate that later became Villa Russiz. He recognised the value of the local microclimate, introduced grape varieties suited to it and applied modern winemaking methods already used successfully in France. He also built a fully underground cellar with high vaulted ceilings.
After his death in 1894, Elvin Ritter von Zahon dedicated herself to caring for orphaned children. An estate building became a children’s home and institute, which was legally recognised and remains active. Under her will, Villa Russiz became a charitable, non-profit organisation.
Average annual production is approximately 50,000 bottles.
