Vineyard and terroir
The grapes grow on slopes around the estate. The vineyards at Capriva del Friuli are influenced by warm air from the nearby Adriatic and cool air from the Alps. Planting density ranges from 4,500 to 7,000 vines per hectare to promote concentration.
Vinification
For the 2016 vintage, the grapes were harvested early in the morning on 7 September. The bunches were gently pressed, followed by fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks.
Ageing
The wine rested on its lees for six months before bottling, then aged in bottle for at least eight months.
Tasting profile
Complex and highly distinctive, with an energetic palate and a pleasantly soft finish.
Label / history
Villa Russiz traces its history to 1869, when the French Count Théodore de La Tour settled with his wife on the hills of Collio. He introduced grape varieties better suited to the local microclimate, applied modern winemaking methods already used successfully in France, and built a high-vaulted cellar entirely underground.
Following his death in 1894, Elvine Ritter von Zahon devoted herself to caring for orphans. A children’s home and an institute were established in one of the estate buildings; the institute was legally recognized and remains in operation. Under her will, Villa Russiz became a non-profit charitable organization.
The estate covers about 94 hectares, including 40 hectares of vineyards.
