Vineyard and terroir

Phiculle grew out of research into the development of grape varieties planted in the estate’s highest vineyards. The project was conducted by geologist and farmer Fabio Maravalle with oenologist Riccardo Cotarella.

Vinification

The grapes are destemmed and gently crushed, after which 20% of the juice is drained away. Fermentation lasts 21 days in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. Extraction includes several pump-overs and cap punch-downs as well as délestage.

Ageing

The wine is transferred to French oak barriques for malolactic fermentation and a total maturation of 15 months. It then rests in bottle for 24 months before release.

Tasting profile

Deep, glossy ruby red with a high level of extract. The nose combines balsamic nuances with blackcurrant, sour cherry, smoke and dark spices. Full-bodied and soft on the palate, it is supported by lively freshness and a refined tannic structure. Balsamic tones, spices and small red berries return through the long finish.

Vintage notes

The 2013 growing season was relatively cool, with frequent winter and spring rain. The vines recovered from their delayed development in July, and warm September weather allowed the grapes to reach full ripeness. Healthy fruit with excellent phenolic maturity arrived at the cellar.

Label / history

Phiculle was created in 2009 following extended vineyard and cellar research intended to unite elegance with power.
