Vineyard and terroir
The vineyard lies in La Morra at 440 m, facing south-east. Its Sant’Agata marls combine clay, very fine sand and calcareous material. Planted in 1985 at 6,000 vines per hectare, it is trained to Guyot. The leaf area has been increased substantially in relation to the number of bunches over the past three decades. Selection takes place throughout fruit set, veraison and ripening, including four or five manual green harvests to reduce production and promote uniform maturity.
Grapes
100% Nebbiolo, Michet variety.
Vinification
The fruit is harvested by hand into small crates to prevent berry breakage before crushing. Alcoholic fermentation takes place with an emerged cap in stainless-steel tanks for 14–15 days under controlled temperature and oxygenation. After fermentation, the wine is protected from oxygen with nitrogen to preserve its aromas and colour.
Ageing
Following malolactic fermentation, the wine matures for 6–8 months in 500 L French-oak tonneaux, comprising 60% new oak and 40% second-passage vessels. During the final two months, the lots are assembled in stainless-steel tanks before bottling.
Technical data
Dry extract: 32 g/L.
Tasting profile
Intense ruby red with purple nuances. The delicate yet highly expressive bouquet moves from macerated rose and cherry stone to fresh underbrush and red fruit. The full palate has well-judged tannin and balanced acidity. Fruit and vanilla mingle with sweet spices, followed by a musky finish and a soft, engaging persistence. The wine is approachable while remaining in an ascending stage of development, with substantial longevity.
