Vineyard and terroir

The grapes grow in vineyards with sandy, limestone-rich soils.

Vintage notes

In 2004, ample rain in May built good water reserves in the vines for summer. A warm September promoted even ripening and contributed to a successful harvest. The vintage met the winemakers’ expectations and was significantly better than the preceding two years.

Label / history

Castello di Volpaia was built in the eleventh century as a fortified outpost on the border between Florence and Siena. Two of its original six towers and part of the surrounding defensive walls survive, while the village of Volpaia retains a layout and walls close to their original form.

Volpaia is also the name of the family of Renaissance inventors Lorenzo and Benvenuto della Volpaia. One of the brothers was a friend of Leonardo da Vinci. Their inventions are held in science museums in Florence, Chicago and Greenwich.
