Vineyard and terroir

The organic Casanova vineyard lies at almost 500 metres above sea level on the southern slope of Volpaia. Its local Sangiovese material has been cultivated there for more than 60 years, preserving the vineyard’s genetic diversity.

Grapes

The vineyard contains 25 local Sangiovese clones.

Vinification

For the 2020 vintage, the grapes were harvested one week earlier than usual. The fruit was healthy, with thick skins and ripe seeds, and was taken directly to the winery for selection before traditional vinification.

Ageing

The wine aged for 18 months in Allier oak barrels. This developed its structure while preserving the fruit’s energy.

Tasting profile

Juicy and rich, with depth and structure. Natural power and elegance are harmonious, while the palate remains balanced and energetic.

Vintage notes

The 2020 growing season began with a mild winter and warm spring, prompting early budbreak. June brought an abrupt cold spell and heavy rain, followed by a hot, dry summer. Moderate water stress helped the grapes develop high concentrations of sugar and aromatic compounds. Together with the age of the vines, these contrasting conditions produced a rich, balanced wine.

Label / history

“Il Puro” means “Pure”; the name refers to the wine’s unembellished expression of its terroir.

Castello di Volpaia was built in the 11th century as a fortified stronghold on the border between Florence and Siena. Two of its six historic towers and part of the original defensive walls remain, while the layout of Volpaia’s buildings and walls has survived almost in its original form. Volpaia is also the surname of a Renaissance family: Lorenzo and Benvenuto della Volpaia were inventors, and one of the brothers was a friend of Leonardo da Vinci. Their inventions are now held in science museums in Florence, Chicago and Greenwich.
