Vineyard and terroir

The Malvasia and Trebbiano fruit comes from vineyards with sandy, limestone-rich soils.

Label / history

The label depicts a church built in the village of Volpaia in 1443 by the architect Michelozzo di Bartolomeo at the request of the Cagnani family. A family member who was a Knight of Malta belonged to a religious order that required him to build a church before joining its brotherhood. The church remains standing and is now used for formal dinners and cultural events.

Castello di Volpaia was built in the eleventh century as a fortification on the border between Florence and Siena. Two of its six ancient towers and part of the original defensive walls survive, while the village’s buildings and walls retain a layout close to their original form.

Volpaia is also the name of the della Volpaia family. During the Renaissance, Lorenzo and Benvenuto della Volpaia invented mechanical devices, and one of the brothers was a friend of Leonardo da Vinci. Their inventions are held in science museums in Florence, Chicago and Greenwich.
