About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The vines grow in a biodynamic vineyard at 300 to 550 metres above sea level. Different grape varieties are planted together in the same vineyard, reviving a traditional practice that Ampeleia set out to bring back.
Grapes
Trebbiano is the base, complemented by Malvasia and Ansonica. The varieties are grown together, and the wine shows how harmony can emerge from diversity.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand in weeks 2–3 of September. The must macerates on the skins for 5 days and ferments in concrete vats.
Ageing
The wine is aged for 6 months in cement tanks.
Tasting profile
Vibrant minerality and lovely fruit.
Vintage notes
2021: The winter in Tuscany was mild and not especially rainy. March was dry and quite warm, which led to early budbreak. Mild, rainy weather in April slowed the rapid start to the growing cycle. Heavy rainfall in April and May created an ideal reserve of water in the soil. May was one of the coolest in recent years, significantly delaying flowering and the fruit set that followed. The summer was dry. September was hot and dry, so the grapes ripened slowly over a long period. The wines of the year have excellent structure and a very good balance.
Label / history
Bianco di Ampeleia expresses the identity of Ampeleia's terroir in a different way from its red wines. In 2021, 25,000 bottles were produced.
