About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
San Francesco is a 3.5 ha west-facing vineyard behind the Gattinara castle. Its volcanic soils are planted with vines more than 60 years old, which produce extremely low yields.
Grapes
The vineyard is planted with two Nebbiolo clones, Lampia and Michet.
Vinification
After harvest, the grapes undergo pre-fermentation skin maceration. Spontaneous fermentation then takes place in a cement tank for 18 days.
Ageing
The wine matures for 18 months in used barriques, followed by 18 months in 25–35 hl casks made from Slavonian or French oak. It then rests for at least one year in bottle in the winery’s cellars before release.
Tasting profile
It expresses an ancient, full-bodied style associated with Nebbiolo from this northern region.
Label / history
Annual production is limited to 4,000 individually numbered bottles.
