About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The Caccia al Piano 1868 estate lies in Castagneto Carducci, in the heart of Bolgheri, on the Tuscan coast. The land holds the warmth of the summer sun, while sea breezes bring cooler air. The winery owns 20 ha of vineyards divided into three plots at different elevations and with different aspects. In line with the Bolgheri DOC and Bolgheri Superiore DOC classifications, only red varieties are grown: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. Vines are planted at 10,000 per hectare, and only 5 bunches are left on each vine to give the grapes greater aromatic concentration.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand. Every bunch is sorted and destemmed so that the berries stay whole. Fermentation is under strict temperature control, with part of the must in stainless steel tanks and the rest in French oak barrels, which gives depth, structure and subtle notes of oak.
Ageing
After alcoholic fermentation the wine spends one year in oak barrels of different levels of toast, half new and half previously used. The separate lots are then blended and aged a further 12 months in large oval casks and standard oak barrels. After bottling it matures for a final 6 months.
Tasting profile
Rich, with depth and structure and subtle oak notes. Sweetness is balanced by fresh acidity. The wine becomes harmonious and elegant.
Vintage notes
The difference between day and night temperatures in August helped the Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc reach ideal ripeness while keeping a balance of sweetness and fresh acidity. The 2020 vintage won a gold medal at Mundus Vini in 2024.
Label / history
The Caccia al Piano 1868 estate was acquired by the Guido Berlucchi group in 2003. The estate produces around 100,000 bottles of red wine a year under the "Ruit Hora" and "Levia Gravia" labels.
