Bertani was founded in the mid-nineteenth century in Quinto di Valpantena, north of Verona, by the brothers Giovanni Battista and Gaetano Bertani. Their entry into wine followed a meeting with Mr. Guyot. From the outset, they introduced new methods of vine cultivation and harvest handling, and were the first in their context to sell wine in bottles rather than in the oak barrels then traditionally used.
In 1888, nearly 30 years after the foundation of the winery, Verona’s Academy of Agriculture, Arts and Commerce examined their work from scientific and practical perspectives and awarded the brothers a special gold prize. Today, the estate comprises 130 hectares around the family’s historic eighteenth-century villa, while its cellars and winery are in Grezzana.
