Label / history
Bigi first produced Grechetto as a varietal wine in 1992. The family’s winemaking history began in 1880 with Luigi Bigi. The estate, formerly owned by the La Trinita monastery, stands on a hill of volcanic origin.
Vines around Orvieto have been cultivated since Etruscan times. The earliest written record dates to 1292, and three years later a special committee called the “Guardians of the Vineyards” was established to preserve vine quality. Local winemaking developments included a network of underground galleries and a method of pressing grapes at ground level.
