About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The Pinot Blanc grows in Kaltern (Caldaro), Alto Adige, in a continental climate with cool nights and bright daytime sunshine. These conditions help the grapes retain fresh acidity and pure aromas. The soils are humus-rich, with limestone gravel and some clay. The vines root deeply, which contributes to the wine's pronounced minerality and structure.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand. After gentle pressing and settling, most of the must ferments in stainless-steel tanks. Around 20% ferments in new French tonneaux, where malolactic fermentation also takes place. Combining neutral vessels and barrels gives a balance of freshness, fruit and textural complexity.
Ageing
The wine spends more than a year on the fine lees, which adds structure and aromatic complexity. After bottling it matures for at least six months so that its elements come together.
Tasting profile
Fresh, elegant and layered, with fresh acidity, pure aromas, pronounced minerality and structure, and textural complexity.
Serving and pairing
Pairs with light dishes, especially seafood. Suited to warm spring and summer evenings.
Label / history
The name "Leopoldine" pays tribute to Baroness Leopoldine von Waideck, a 19th-century opera singer from Graz. Her love for her husband, Archduke Heinrich, and the couple's shared winemaking practices at Castel Sallegg inspired the wine.
