About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

Poggio ai Merli is a single-variety Merlot from its namesake vineyard in Castellina in Chianti, Siena. The site lies at 350–400 m on limestone soil. The vines are trained to spurred cordon at a density of 6,000 plants per hectare. The technical sheet records a yield of 45 quintals per hectare.

Grapes

100% Merlot.

Vinification

Harvest takes place in the first week of September. Vinification is in steel, with the wine page specifying stainless-steel tanks under controlled temperature. Malolactic fermentation is completed.

Ageing

The wine matures for 24–30 months in French-oak barriques, 50% new, followed by 12 months in bottle.

Tasting profile

Deep, vibrant purple with clarity and a substantial texture. Blackberry and blueberry lead the complex nose, joined by raspberry, cherry, plum and further dark-fruit notes, then roasted accents of cocoa, vanilla and coffee. The palate is warm, soft and enveloping, with fine, elegant tannins and balanced structure. A long, harmonious finish leaves a pronounced fruity aftertaste.

Serving and pairing

Suited to main courses and red meats, especially liver and wild boar.

Label / history

The first vintage was 1999. The wine was conceived to express Merlot through the particular position of the Poggio ai Merli vineyard.
